Biography
The MacDonald-Breton-Sullivan Trio, one of Canada’s quintessential jazz art trios, features complete programmes of their original new compositions, as well as the best of bebop and new twists on the standards. Starring Juno Award-winning composer/guitarist Andrew MacDonald, celebrated jazz bassist Guy Breton and the indefatigable drummer/vibraphonist Kevin Sullivan, the Trio’s performances feature intricately arranged heads and solos where improvisation is at the heart of the music. Well known as a composer of works for symphony orchestra and chamber groups, Andrew Paul MacDonald is also busy as a guitarist in concert and on both CBC and Société Radio-Canada. There are twenty CDs of his compositions to date, one of which won the Juno Award for Best Composition, another both the East Coast Music Award and a Canadian Independent Music Award for best recording. Guy Breton has been a professional bassist for many years, notably as a member of the Boppin’ Blues Band, the Blue Note Quartet and Garou and the Untouchables. He has performed at numerous festivals including the Festival de Blues de Jonquière, the Canadian Blues Summit and the Festival de Blues de Sherbrooke, and has recorded television broadcasts with TVA. Director of the Jazz-Improvisation Workshop at Bishop’s University, Kevin Sullivan has been playing professionally since his late teens. While at the Berklee School of Music in Boston he studied percussion with Fred Buda and Al Dawson. He’s played in many jazz festivals over the years, including those in Ottawa, Barrie, Toronto, Rimouski and Montreal.
The MacDonald-Breton-Sullivan Trio launched their first CD “Shuffletown Blue” to rave reviews. Mathieu Petit of Voir says that this disc is “fully charged jazz that never lets up”, while Mike McDevitt of the Sherbrooke Record wrote “the band is free-flowing and wildly creative…this first release provides a pleasant and enthusiastic blend of several different styles adding up to a wonderful sampling of accessible jazz fusion. Check these guys out.”
