Introduction
Andrew Paul MacDonald has been contributing to the wealth of Canadian culture for the last forty years as a composer, guitarist, and pedagogue.
Winner of the 1995 Juno Award for “Best Classical Composition” for his Violin Concerto, his compositions have been commissioned, performed and recorded by Canada’s best musicians. He has composed music of the highest artistic quality for practically every possible combination, creating concertos, symphonies, chamber music, instrumental solos, art song cycles, choral music, operas, music theatre and electronic music, as well as original jazz music and arrangements of classical and jazz masterpieces.
As a guitarist, he was trained in the classical tradition at an early age and has given many solo, chamber, and concerto performances over the years. Recently he has developed a new technique that enables him to play classical repertoire on an archtop guitar with subtle amplification. This innovative tone blends beautifully with classical instruments and balances excellently when he performs with symphony orchestra, string quartet or grand piano. Besides delivering wonderful interpretations of the works of masters such as Bach and Schubert, MacDonald also features his own compositions on his programmes—one of the few composers in the world today able to carry out such a feat.
MacDonald also performs with his jazz ensemble, the MacDonald-Breton-Sullivan Trio, delighting audiences with original compositions as well as new twists on the jazz standards. He also appears regularly with The Future Blues Band, a group dedicated to the performance of traditional blues repertoire.
